Glowing Fibers: Beryl Taylor Project

MATERIALS:
  • Lumin-Arte Polished Pigments Paints
  • Lumin-Arte Acrylic Medium
  • Habotai silk
  • Dupioni silk
  • Felt
  • Paper towels
  • Sewing machine
  • Beads
  • Eyelets
  • Needle for hand stitching
  • DMC thread
  • Spackle
  • Small piece of muslin
DIRECTIONS:
1. Mix Lumin-Arte powders with Lumin-Arte acrylic medium for fabric to create the paints, following the instructions on the bottles.
2. Paint Habotai silk rectangle (Panel 1) with the mixed Lumin-Arte paint.
3. Lay the Habotai silk rectangle onto a felt background and machine stitch it with gold thread in vertical lines to the background.
4. Scrunch-up a square of paper toweling (Panel 2) and paint it (whilst in it's scrunched-up state) with a very dilute mix of Lumin-Arte paint and leave to dry (in it's scrunched-up state).
5. Coat a rectangular piece of muslin (Panel 3) with spackle and leave to dry.
6. When dry, paint the spackled muslin with Lumin-Arte paint ("metallic mica bronze").
7. Embellish a square of Dupioni silk ( Panel 4 ) with random running stitch and then paint the square with a full strength mix of "Lumin-Arte" paint.
8. Rubber stamp a flower image onto a tiny piece of Habotai silk (Panel 5). Lay the piece of silk onto felt and machine-stitch around the image.
9. Produce final piece by layering and gluing the panels (Numbers 1 through 5) on top of each other.
10. Embellish with eyelets and beads.

What are Polished Pigments?
LuminArte Polished Pigments™ are brilliant ground pigments mixed with shimmering micas.

Mix with one part Polished Pigments™ to 2 parts Simple Solutions™ to make your own shimmering acrylic paints. Create a soft sheer look by adding more Simple Solution™. A little pigment goes a long way!

Simple Solution™ #1 is for use on fabric, glass and leather. Simple Solution™ #2 is for use on paper, plastic, walls.

Beryl's Tips for Using Polished Pigments

1. I always dilute the paint powders with the recommended medium but it is also possible to add water to make even more dilute whilst retaining the full color of the paint.

2. I have not yet found a paper on which it does not work. For fabric, the very fine Habotai silk accepts it well but it does tend to stiffen in the process; this can sometimes add to the effect.

3. If you make a really thick consistency, it is possible to etch into it.

An ATC Offer You Cannot Refuse?

The International Quilt Festival/Long Beach show in July will be featuring an exhibit entitled, "The Silver Screen." For those who missed out on entering a quilt, here's an opportunity to celebrate your love of movies and all things entertaining. Yes, we're talking to you!

We will be featuring the ultimate artist trading card trade in the Make It University!™ section and strongly encourage you to bring ATCs with any kind of entertainment theme: movies, music, TV shows, favorite quotes or lyrics. For this particular ATC trade, there is no limit to the number of ATCs you can bring/ trade. You can create to infinity--and beyond!

You can make these ATCs from paper, fabric, both, or with another medium altogether. Remember, if you build them, we will trade--no matter how many ATCs you have. So get busy! And may the muse be with you.

(We know: We had you at "ATC Trade.")

Help Us Plan the Next STUDIOS issue!
Due to the positive reception for our first STUDIOS issue, we are publishing a second edition, which will be available this October.

This second edition will feature a wider variety of studios-from collage and quilting to weaving, knitting, and beading. The featured studios will vary greatly in size, from rented outside studio space to tiny in-home closet-sized studios.

If you have anything studio-related to share, please follow the general submissions protocol on our website and send along images of your studios and ideas to us.

We are particularly interested in seeing:

  • Before & after shots of studio re-dos
  • How you make the most of a small space
  • Any craft-related collections you have (such as antique sewing boxes, Bakelite buttons, vintage knitting needles, etc.)
  • Storage tips (especially "green" ones)
  • How you incorporate teaching or selling your art in your studio
  • Unusual or unconventional storage ideas
  • Unusual or unconventional wall and window treatments (like walls covered with collaged fabric or paper parasols as window shades)
  • Small project ideas
